ABOUT ME
My name is Ava Sabin and I am currently a freshman in high school (class of 2027). I am hoping to pursue riding at a collegiate level and cheering on my teammates as we all work toward the same goal. I currently live in Reno, Nevada but I am originally from New York and currently spend half of the year in both places. I have been riding for seven years and attended my first A show in 2021 competing in the 2’0”-2’3” divisions. Within less than two years, I have quickly moved up and have been competitive in the 3’6” equitation ring. I have been training with Hope Glynn and I have been competing consistently on the west coast circuit.
Maitri is my seven year old green equitation horse who we purchased as a five year old. Together we have qualified for CPHA Style of Riding Medal Finals, USHJA Hunt Seat Medal Finals, NCEA Medal Finals, USHJA/EMO Jump Seat Medal Finals, and USHJA Gladstone Cup. Some of our most notable accomplishments include top finishes in the age group equitation out of 10+ on various catch rides and multiple top 5 finishes in USHJA National Hunter Derbies on my green horse Maitri. In addition to riding Maitri, I have a 9-year-old horse Kilroy who I have been showing in the 3'6' equitation. In our first few months together we have placed 3rd overall in the USHJA Hunt Seat Medal Finals West and 9th place finish in the USHJA Jumping Seat Finals West. I also frequently catch ride at shows; anything from a former eventing horse to an equitation sale horse. My biggest catch ride accomplishment is competing in CPHA Style of Riding Finals, which was also my first 3’3” medal final, on a horse I had previously ridden twice. We received scores of 83 and 80 finishing 11th out of 77 competitors. I also catch rode a horse at NHS Hamel finals and ended top 12 in the 14 -15 age group equitation after only two rides previous.
I currently attend Bishop Manogue Catholic High School in Reno, Nevada where I have a 3.81 (weighted) and a 3.75 (unweighted) GPA and am involved heavily in sports and community service. I am a member of the varsity track and field team where I run 100m and 300m hurdles and the 4x2 and the 4x1 relays. I am also a member of the Sodality Club, an all girls community service club. I am also a Junior Ambassador for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation as I have been a type 1 diabetic since I was eight years old. I am passionate about helping spread awareness and teaching people about the cause and maintenance of type 1 diabetes. My biggest academic achievement was completing a year-long project on type 1 diabetes where I completed a research paper, project, and presented my research to 4th-7th grade students as well as parents and teachers within the school community.
While my long term goal is competing on behalf of a division one equestrian team, my short term goals are to continue to improve my equitation, horsemanship, and qualify and be competitive at major equitation finals.
